In December 2024, I had the chance to visit Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay for their first-ever Christmas Train Show at the Flower Dome. The exhibit was a mesmerizing blend of holiday cheer and intricate model train displays, creating a magical experience for visitors of all ages. Running from December 2, 2024, to January 5, 2025, it marked a refreshing departure from the usual Poinsettia Wishes theme, offering something truly unique and enchanting.
A Journey Through Miniature America
At the heart of the exhibition was a beautifully crafted showcase of American garden railways. I watched as tiny trains wound their way along detailed tracks, passing miniature replicas of iconic U.S. landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central Terminal, and the Empire State Building. This collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Singapore highlighted the rich tradition of garden railroading, which dates back to the 19th century when steam-powered miniatures were a prized hobby among the wealthy.
Singapore's Rail Heritage
One of the highlights of the exhibition was the tribute to Singapore’s rail history. A detailed model of the Raffles Place MRT Station, which first opened on December 12, 1987, was on display, capturing an important milestone in the country’s transit development. I enjoyed exploring a timeline that traced the growth of Singapore’s rail network—from its modest beginnings to the extensive system it is today. The most exciting part was stepping inside a replica MRT train, offering a nostalgic glimpse into how Singapore’s public transport has evolved over the years.
The Swedish Railbus Y7 1113
Adding an international flair to the exhibition, I was thrilled to see the Swedish Railbus Y7 1113 on display. Powered by a Scania "straight 8" diesel engine with a turbocharger, this railbus has been running since February 1959. It originally served the Swedish State Railways before later being repurposed as a training vehicle. Stepping inside was a unique experience—various model train sets were exhibited inside, making it a fascinating addition to the exhibition’s global narrative.
Festive Floral Displays
As I wandered through the Flower Dome, I was captivated by the vibrant seasonal floral arrangements that complemented the train exhibits. Bright red poinsettias, glossy holly adorned with vivid red berries, and the towering Norway spruce filled the space with holiday charm. Adding to the botanical beauty, Japanese skimmia, known for its fragrant white flowers in spring and winter berries, enriched the scene, fully immersing me in the festive spirit.
Impressions of Monet: The Experience
Beyond the Christmas Train Show, I also had the chance to explore Impressions of Monet: The Experience at the Flower Field Hall. Included with admission to the Flower Dome, this exhibit offered a deep dive into the Impressionist movement, culminating in a stunning multimedia presentation that brought Monet’s masterpieces to life. Running until February 18, 2025, it was the perfect artistic touch to complement the holiday displays.
Visitor Experiences
The Christmas Train Show was a delightful blend of nostalgia and festive joy. Many visitors described it as "cute and nostalgic," and I couldn’t agree more. Families gathered around the detailed displays, sharing in the holiday magic and creating cherished memories together.
Conclusion
The 2024 Christmas Train Show at Gardens by the Bay’s Flower Dome was a magical blend of cultural appreciation, historical storytelling, and festive wonder. By merging model train artistry with stunning floral displays, it offered a truly enchanting holiday experience that delighted visitors of all ages.
